PURSUIT OF A PERFECT PHYSIQUE.

PURSUIT OF A PERFECT PHYSIQUE.

Most times we are caught up in between what we want and what we really need. This also applies to our health which is highly influenced by "The Social Media effect". Could it be a leading factor to body dysmorphia?

 Let's find out.

Going back into the African history, image wasn't really an area of concern for a man. Women would somehow find ways of amplifying their outward looks either by piercings, wearing of beads etc. In some African cultures, thick women were highly valued for they were linked to high fertility rate. This was among the initial standards of a desirable physique for women back then. The culture perceived men as leaders, protectors and providers. Physical looks wasn't really a priority as compared to skills.

Centuries later, the whole narrative has completely changed. There are pros and cons to it but analyses shows it to be leaning more on the cons.

Is there anything like a perfect physique?

It's indeed a hard question to answer. I choose to believe there isn't and if there was, it would be more of a fiction than reality. Despite having individuals whom we idolize for their physiques, they too are in pursuit of a better physique or in pursuit of improve on particular lagging areas. Some of the most important questions we should be asking ourselves before the pursuit are:

  1. Can it be achieved?
  2. Is it really sustainable?
  3. Is it really what you need?
  4. What happens once it's achieved?

Repercussions of the pursuit.

When do we get to appreciate the optimum threshold of our capabilities and focus on maintenance? In the process of the pursuit, some psychological challenges may occur resulting in Body Dysmorphia Disorder. Lately, this has become a low-key problem which seems to be on the rise. This could explain why there is a rampant abuse of PEDs among young men and the increase seek of plastic surgery among women. When both are done under proper supervision by a qualified medical practitioner then safety is somehow assured. The problem creeps in when the same guys seek backdoor help from unqualified individuals for cheap prices. This in most cases is as a result of peer pressure.

Take away points.

We really need to tone down on the pursuit and learn to appreciate the small steps we take during the process. Appreciating the difference in everyone's genetics, will slow down the comparison aspect and help embrace our capabilities. It's not always what it seems on social media. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes which unfortunately is used as the tool of trade and we all know that the buyer intended is no-one else but you and me. Replacing the words to Pursuit of a better physique would be a game changer. Let it be focused more on building a better version of you rather than chasing what can't be sustained.
